Decoding orthodontics: Exploring value, managing risks, and evidence-based practice

Orthodontists take pride in the outcomes they achieve, but patients, may have unrealistic expectations, anticipating lifelong stability after investing so much time, effort, and resources into their treatment. This discussion challenges us to scrutinize the evidence underpinning the value of orthodontics. Does the benefit outweigh potential risks and disadvantages? It prompts us to investigate the potential pitfalls and complications associated with orthodontic procedures, urging a comprehensive understanding of the risks involved. Consent for orthodontic treatment must encompass a detailed discussion on these potential drawbacks, ensuring patients make informed decisions. Moreover, the role of clinical practice guidelines in navigating the complex landscape of orthodontic care will be explored. Understanding the significance of these guidelines in standardizing practices and ensuring optimal patient care is essential for both practitioners and patients.

Anne Marie Kuijpers-Jagtman is Emeritus Professor of Orthodontics and currently serves as a senior faculty and educator at the University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands, and as Adjunct Professor at the University of Bern, and Universitas Indonesia Faculty of Dentistry in Jakarta (Indonesia).

From 1992 to September 2014 she was Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Orthodontics and Craniofacial Biology at Radboud University in Nijmegen (the Netherlands). From 2014 to 2018 she had been appointed in the position of Scientific Integrity Officer of the Radboud University.

Throughout her career Professor Kuijpers-Jagtman received a number of prestigious international awards including, amongst other, the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award for Orthodontic Research of the AAO, the 2020 David L. Turpin Award for Evidence Based Research of the Am J of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJODO), and the 2018 Paul Goldhaber Award of Harvard University School of Dental Medicine. Recently, she was honored with a portrait in the Radboud University Hall of Fame on the occasion of the university's 100^th anniversary.

She is a Past-President of the European Orthodontic Society, and she holds honorary membership of the Word Federation of Orthodontists, the British Orthodontic Society, and of 4 other orthodontic associations around the world.

Prof. Kuijpers-Jagtman has undertaken extensive translational and clinical research in the field of orthodontics and cleft lip and palate. In recent years, her major interests have been in 3D-imaging, evidence-based orthodontic treatment, and clinical practice guideline development. She has (co)authored over 450 publications, supervised 61 PhD theses, and has given numerous lectures in 40 countries around the globe. She is a teacher by heart, and she is the cofounder of the Network of Erasmus based European Orthodontic postgraduate Programs (NEBEOP).

“Retention, Relapse, Complications and Retreatment”

Piotr Fudalej completed his studies of dentistry at Warsaw Medical University (Poland) and pursued biology at the University of Warsaw. Specializing in orthodontics, he earned degrees from the University of Washington in Seattle and obtained two doctorates: one in Poland in 1999 and another in the Netherlands in 2011 at Radboud University Nijmegen. Presently, he holds the position of professor and heads the Department of Orthodontics at Jagiellonian University in Kraków (Poland). Additionally, he serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Bern in Switzerland.

Having supervised/co-supervised 15 doctoral students from the Netherlands, Switzerland, Poland, and the Czech Republic, Piotr Fudalej has contributed  significantly to orthodontic research. His research output includes over 90 articles published in peer-reviewed international scientific journals. As the President-Elect of the European Orthodontic Society, he is slated to organize the 100th EOS Congress in Krakow in 2025.

In 2010, he was honored with the "2010 Samuel Berkowitz Long-Term Outcomes Study Award" for the article "Dental arch relationship in children with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate following Warsaw (one-stage repair) and Oslo protocols." In 2022, he received "The 2022 Dewell Award for Best Clinical Research" for the article "A comparative assessment of failures and periodontal health between 2 mandibular lingual retainers in orthodontic patients. A 2-year follow-up, single practice-based randomized trial."

For over 20 years, he has maintained a specialized orthodontic practice in Warsaw.
